How Do You Know If Your Home Has Mold?

Mold infestations are often difficult to identify because mold colonies tend to establish themselves in areas of the home that have low visibility, such as under sinks, under carpeting, and in hidden areas, like behind washing machines, hot water heaters, and dishwashers. Mold can even be found in air ducts, furnace filters, and air conditioning filters, which results in the spores being distributed throughout the home via these heating and cooling systems. Although mold testing is the only way to determine for certain if mold is indeed a part of the picture, there are certain signs and symptoms that indicate that having a test performed for household mold is in order. Following are four signs that mold may be present in your home.

Bubbling Paint

Most people think that bubbling paint is the result of something that went wrong during the painting process itself, such as a failure to properly prepare the surface for a fresh coat of paint. Although this may very well be the case, it is also possible that the bubbling is being caused by an underlying mold infestation. If the bubbling seems to appear out of nowhere within a relatively short period of time, it is best to schedule a mold test, especially if the bubbling is accompanied by any discoloration on the painted surface. Paint that suddenly starts to peel for no apparent reason is another red flag that may indicate a growing mold colony.

Unexplained Allergy Symptoms

Sneezing, itching and watery eyes, difficulty breathing, hives, or other signs commonly associated with allergic reactions may be a sign that your home is experiencing a mold infestation. In relatively rare cases, a reaction to mold may result in acute respiratory distress, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Green or Black Spots on Surfaces

Green or black spots on surfaces are a far surer sign of mold than the two possibilities listed above, especially if you find them in areas of the home that experience high humidity levels. Early detection is important when it comes to mold infestations — the smaller the affected area, the easier it will be to treat the condition. Mold that is allowed to run rampant may result in entire walls having to be replaced. Regularly checking under sinks, behind water appliances, and other areas where mold is likely to develop can help catch mold problems early.
